**Let me preface this post by saying two things…1) I forget to charge all things chargeable ALL THE TIME 2) No amount analyzing your numbers, stats, spreadsheets, etc, of your training can make up for going out , day after day, paddling your arse off.
This is what I’m running on my new HOBIE Carbon 14ft racer. After years of sitting on a bike training for triathlons I got use to “zoning out” on my speedometer…it just eases the pain a little bit to me. Now there is so much to see on SUP which is awesome, but sometimes when you are grinding out mile after mile its nice just to zone on how fast you are going. So with that said, I usually run either the Garmin GPS and/or the Speed Puck.
Here is before (and what my board looks like most of the time)
And here is overkill, but very informative. On the left is the GoPro Helmet mount with my Garmin GPS attached. When the Garmin is on your wrist it becomes useless because you have to stop paddling to read it. So I rigged up this removable system. Feels really well hooked on even for going in the ocean. I like to see the distance ticking off, minute/mile, and heart rate. I do switch it up from time to time. On the right is the Speed Puck it comes from my racing sailboat back ground. It reads real-time speed in knots and gives you a compass heading in the other mode. I like having the speed puck to tell me when I am stuck in a bad current or when I gain speed through better technique. It’s very sensitive and takes a little time to process how to use it to your advantage. I also like to go solo out in the open ocean so its nice to have a compass to get be back if it turns nasty.
I bumped the board as I took the picture and that is why the Speed Puck is reading movement on dry land. Although the new Hobies are REALLY fast!!!!
Rocket ready for take off.
